It was organized by the famed Brigadier Gen. Michael Corcoran, formerly of the 69th New York State Militia. Corcoran however, died when his horse fell on him in December of 1863, so his brigade and the 164th fought without him. The Legion and the 164th was assigned to Gibbon's Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac in May of 1864, in time to join Grant's bloody march on Richmond. The regiment's first significant action was at Spotsylvania in May, but it was the assault at Cold Harbor that resulted in its major casualties with six officers in addition to Col. McMahon killed, 16 enlisted men dead, 59 wounded and 82 missing. The regiment would again have significant casualties in attacks on Petersburg in June of the same year. The 164th was mustered out on July 15, 1865 after having gone through some of the bloodiest fights of the Army of the Potomac. It was organized by the famed Brigadier Gen. Michael Corcoran, formerly of the 69th New York State Militia. Corcoran however, died when his horse fell on him in December of 1863, so his brigade and the 164th fought without him. The Legion and the 164th was assigned to Gibbon's Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac in May of 1864, in time to join Grant's bloody march on Richmond. The regiment's first significant action was at Spotsylvania in May, but it was the assault at Cold Harbor that resulted in its major casualties with six officers in addition to Col. McMahon killed, 16 enlisted men dead, 59 wounded and 82 missing. The regiment would again have significant casualties in attacks on Petersburg in June of the same year. The 164th was mustered out on July 15, 1865 after having gone through some of the bloodiest fights of the Army of the Potomac. After determining that New York was too risky to assault, the allied force conducted a skillful march across New Jersey and into Virginia to bottle up another British force under General Cornwallis at Yorktown. After being reinforced, by the French fleet under Compte de Grasse with further troops from the West Indies, the allies laid siege to the British who had fortified their position. On October 19, 1781 the British forces surrendered insuring American Independence two years later.\u003cbr\u003eThe Saintonge was numbered as the 85\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e Regiment and their brass buttons were so numbered. The uniform was white with dark green cuffs and edgings to the lapels, pockets, cuffs and shoulder straps. The coat tails were decorated with a green hunting horn device. During the summer, tall white linen leggings with cloth covered buttons were worn and in the winter, black wool. Chasseurs and Grenadiers wore small black waxed mustaches whereas the battalion companies were clean shaven.
