Damascus steel is not a single material. It is a process — layers of high-carbon and low-carbon steel folded and drawn out repeatedly until the grain structures interlock, creating the characteristic flowing pattern visible on the surface and running through the blade. Every Damascus knife we carry at Relic & Reel was forged by working smiths using that process. None of them came off a production line.
We stock hand-forged Damascus and D2 steel knives and swords sourced directly from the smiths who made them. The selection is curated, not exhaustive — every piece listed has been assessed for craftsmanship and honestly described. If a blade has a visible inclusion or a handle with uneven fit, that will be in the listing. If it does not, we would not have listed it.
What We Carry
Our Damascus inventory spans fixed-blade hunters, display knives, full-tang working blades, and collector-grade pieces with decorative handles. We also carry D2 steel knives for buyers who want high tool-steel performance without the Damascus premium. Each listing specifies steel type, blade length, handle material, whether the blade is sharpened or display-finish, and full tang construction where applicable.
We do not carry kitchen knives, chef sets, or production Damascus with machine-pressed handles. Our focus is the collector and enthusiast market — blades made by smiths, not factories.
Hand Forged Damascus Knife
A hand-forged Damascus knife is distinguished from a factory piece by the forge work itself: the layers are manipulated by the smith during forging, not acid-etched onto a surface after the fact. The pattern on a genuine hand-forged blade runs through the steel and is visible on the cross-section. We note this distinction in every listing because it matters to collectors and it affects value.
The smiths we source from work in the US and internationally, with a preference for makers whose process is documentable and whose work we have handled directly. We are a small operation; we know what we carry.
Authentic Damascus Steel
The Damascus market has a counterfeiting problem. Acid-etched pattern-welded steel is sold as Damascus; production blades with machine-stamped handles are sold as hand-forged; alloy compositions are misrepresented. We do not carry any of that. Every Damascus knife listed at Relic & Reel is genuine pattern-welded steel, forged in layers by the smiths who made it, and described accurately.

Collector Knives for Sale
Not every blade on this site is a working knife. Some are display pieces — high layer-count Damascus with carved handles and mirror-polished edges, intended for a stand or a case, not a sheath. Others are fully functional working blades that happen to be beautiful. The listings make the distinction clear. If you are buying for display, we will tell you which pieces are built for it. If you are buying for use, we will tell you which ones are sharpened and what the steel is rated for.
Ordering and Shipping
Fixed blades ship with the edge protected and packaged securely. All orders include tracking. If a blade arrives and it is not what the listing described — wrong steel, different finish, anything — our 30-day return policy applies with no friction. How do I know if a Damascus knife is real?
Genuine pattern-welded Damascus has a layer pattern that runs through the steel, not just across the surface. You can see this on the spine and at the ricasso where the blade meets the handle. Acid-etched imitations have a surface pattern that rubs off or scratches through to plain steel underneath. All Damascus knives listed at Relic & Reel are genuine pattern-welded steel — we describe the layer count and forging method in each listing.
What is the difference between Damascus and D2 steel?
Damascus (pattern-welded steel) is a composite of multiple steel types folded during forging, valued for its visual character and the performance characteristics that come from the layering process. D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel with excellent edge retention and wear resistance — it does not have a pattern and is typically darker in finish. Damascus is chosen for its combination of aesthetics and performance; D2 is chosen for pure working performance. Both are serious blade steels; the right choice depends on what you are using or displaying the knife for.
Are the knives sharpened?
Each listing specifies. Display-finish blades are often polished to a mirror edge that is not a working edge. Working blades are sharpened and ready to use. We do not guess or generalize — if the listing does not specify sharpness, contact us before ordering and we will confirm.

Yes, where blade import laws permit. Laws governing fixed blades vary significantly by country and state. It is the buyer's responsibility to verify that their jurisdiction allows the import of the specific blade type ordered. We will flag known restrictions where we are aware of them, but we are not a legal resource for every jurisdiction.
